Feeling those butterflies

It's officially summer here in Texas...as in ninety-plus degree weather for a couple of days straight. For some, that means racing out of doors for swimming and other activies. I prefer hiding indoors. I've been rediscovering the joy that is origami over the past few weeks. This includes a box full of bats for a coworker and these beauties:

Due to a combination of miser mentality and a fear of failure, it takes a great deal of effort for me to use actual origami paper. I'm always afraid of wasting a sheet on a failed project. Most of the time, I use paper that was destined for the recycle bin--here's looking at you, lawn service flier! The drawback to this scarcity mindset is that computer paper is typically too heavy for truly intricate projects. Therefore, the final product looks junky, and then I'm too discouraged to use the nice paper because I couldn't achieve it with scrap paper...and the cycle continues. It's an illness, I tell you.

After several weeks of folding, I still feel immense pressure with every crease. Still, there is a joy to be found in using the right materials for the right project. The alternative is akin to cutting a tomato with a butter knife: sloppy and a waste of time. I do have plans for more projects over the next few weeks, so stay tuned!
